What is sexual harassment?

Sexual harassment is unwelcome behavior or communication that is sexual in nature when:

  • A student or employee is led to believe that he or she must submit to unwelcome sexual conduct or communications in order to gain something in return, such as a grade, a promotion, a place on a sports team or activity, or any educational or employment decision, or
  • The conduct substantially interferes with a student's educational performance, or creates an intimidating or hostile educational or employment environment.
Examples of Sexual Harassment:
  • Pressuring a person for sexual favors
  • Unwelcome touching of a sexual nature
  • Writing graffiti of a sexual nature or displaying sexually suggestive pictures, cartoons, or materials
  • Unwanted sexual advances, propositions, or other sexual comments, including remarks, jokes, or comments about a person’s sexuality or sexual experience
  • Distributing sexually explicit texts, e-mails, or pictures
  • Physical violence, including rape and sexual assault, molestation, or attempts to commit assaults
Reporting

Bright Star is committed to equitable and swift resolution of misconduct. If you experience sexual harassment:

  • Notify the school counselor, or any other adult at the school, or notify Bright Star's Title IX Officer.
  • You may also complete a formal, written complaint at any time. The claim will be investigated thoroughly, involving only the necessary parties. Confidentiality will be maintained as much as possible.

It is unlawful to retaliate in any way against an individual who has articulated a good faith concern about sexual harassment against him/her/them or against another individual.
