Superstar Reader: Q&A with Student Julez

In August 2019, Bright Star 8th grade student Julez B. stood on the field at Dodgers Stadium and was recognized for winning the 2019 Dodgers LA Reads challenge!
We sat down with Julez at Stella Middle Charter Academy to learn more about what the experience was like and how he learned to love reading.

Bright Star Schools: You recently won the Dodgers LA Reads challenge! Congratulations! Tell us more about the challenge.
Julez: It was fun. My mom signed me up. You have to read books, and I got prizes if I completed a certain amount of minutes. The goal was 1,000 minutes, but I only read 900 minutes this summer. It was a lot of books!
BSS: As part of winning, you were recognized on the field at a Dodgers game, and also met players. What was that like?
Julez: I was very nervous. I liked the attention, but it was too much.
BSS: Have you always loved reading, or did you grow to love it?
Julez: I didn’t like it when I was little because all I wanted to do was play. Now, books are interesting and I understand the concepts and the metaphors. I visit libraries a lot -- every day, except for Sunday when they’re closed.
BSS: What helped you learn to love reading?
Julez: When I was in 6th grade, I started imagining and understanding what I was reading. I wasn’t just reading the words.
BSS: What books do you love and would you recommend to others?
Julez: The Lightning Thief [by Rick Riordan] is my all time favorite. It’s about a boy who doesn’t know he’s a demi-god and that he has powers. There are people trying to kill him, and he defeats them and saves Olympus.
I like books that build their own societies, and books that are mysteries. I like The Giver [by Lois Lowry], The City of Ember [by Jeanne DuPrau], and The Twelve-Fingered Boy [by John Hornor Jacobs].
BSS: What advice would you give young people who struggle with reading?
Julez: Imagine the story better. Don’t just read the words. Imagine what you’re reading.
BSS: What’s next for you? Will you do the challenge again?
Julez: I might do the challenge again. And I know where I’m going. After high school, I’m going to go to community college for two years and then get a full-ride to Cal Berkeley. There are a lot of things I want to study like film, or maybe become a doctor.

Bright Star Schools: ¡Recientemente ganaste el concurso Dodgers LA Reads! ¡Felicidades! Cuéntanos más sobre el desafío.
Julez: Fue divertido. Mi mamá me inscribió. Tienes que leer libros, y obtuve premios si completaba una cierta cantidad de minutos. El objetivo era 1,000 minutos, pero solo leí 900 minutos este verano. ¡Fueron muchos libros!
BSS: Como parte de ganar, fuiste reconocido en el campo en un juego de los Dodgers y también conociste a jugadores. ¿Como fue eso?
Julez: Estaba muy nervioso. Me gustó la atención, pero fue demasiada.
BSS: ¿Siempre te ha gustado leer o creciste a amar la lectura?
Julez: No me gustaba cuando era pequeño porque todo lo que quería hacer era jugar. Ahora, los libros son interesantes y entiendo los conceptos y las metáforas. Visitó muchas bibliotecas todos los días, excepto los domingos cuando están cerradas.
BSS: ¿Qué te ayudó a aprender a amar la lectura?
Julez: Cuando estaba en sexto grado, comencé a imaginar y entender lo que estaba leyendo. No solo estaba leyendo las palabras.
BSS: ¿Qué libros te encantan y recomendarías a otros?
Julez: The Lightning Thief [por Rick Riordan] es mi favorito de todos. Se trata de un niño que no sabe que es un semidiós y que tiene poderes. Hay personas que intentan matarlo, y él los derrota y salva al Olimpo.
Me gustan los libros que construyen sus propias sociedades, y los libros que son misterios. Me gusta The Giver [de Lois Lowry], The City of Ember [de Jeanne DuPrau] y The Twelve-Fingered Boy [de John Hornor Jacobs].
BSS: ¿Qué consejo le darías a los jóvenes que luchan con la lectura?
Julez: Imagina mejor la historia. No solo leas las palabras. Imagina lo que estás leyendo.
BSS: ¿Qué sigue para ti? ¿Harás el concurso otra vez?
Julez: Podría hacer el concurso nuevamente. Y sé a dónde voy. Después de la preparatoria, iré al colegio comunitario por dos años y luego iré a la universidad Cal Berkeley con una beca. Hay muchas cosas que quiero estudiar, como cinematografía, o tal vez ser doctor.
