Bright Star Schools is proud to welcome Darla R. Vance as the new principal of Stella Middle Charter Academy, where she will lead the school’s efforts to foster academic excellence, strengthen family partnerships, and create a supportive environment where every student can thrive.

A South Los Angeles native and parent of a charter school graduate, Vance brings more than 20 years of experience in education and a deep understanding of the transformative power of schools that nurture the whole child. “Every student deserves to feel supported, valued, and empowered to succeed,” said Vance. “In partnership with our students, families, and staff, I look forward to building on the strengths of Stella Middle School while expanding opportunities in academics, athletics, arts, leadership, and enrichment.”

Vance’s commitment to education is deeply personal. Having raised a child who graduated from a charter school, she understands the importance of personalized learning and the critical role that strong family-school partnerships play in student success. Her leadership philosophy centers on collaboration, inclusivity, and creating a culture where every student is known, challenged, and inspired to reach their full potential.

Over the course of her career, Vance has worked closely with community organizations to broaden opportunities for students beyond the classroom. She has partnered with organizations including Arts Matter, Best Buy Teen Tech Center, and Two Bit Circus to bring enriching experiences in the arts, technology, and STEAM education to young people across South Los Angeles.

As principal of Stella Middle Charter Academy, Vance plans to build on the school’s strong foundation by focusing on four key priorities:

  • Raising student achievement in mathematics and English language arts.
  • Strengthening meaningful partnerships with families and caregivers.
  • Fostering a safe, inclusive, and positive school culture.
  • Expanding access to athletics, technology, arts, leadership, and enrichment opportunities.

Since opening in 2003, Stella Middle Charter Academy has been committed to preparing students for success in high school, college, and beyond. Guided by Bright Star Schools’ values of Integridad and Ubuntu, the school emphasizes academic rigor, restorative practices, and the development of thoughtful leaders who positively impact their communities.

“Education is a partnership,” Vance said. “Together, we will continue building a school community where every student is empowered to achieve academic excellence, lead with integrity, and make a positive impact on the world.”

Bright Star Schools is excited to welcome Principal Vance and looks forward to the leadership, passion, and vision she brings to the Stella Middle community.
