Supporting Student Wellness at Bright Star Schools
At Bright Star Schools, we believe students are best able to learn, grow, and thrive when they feel safe, supported, and connected.
Each day, our School Counselors and site teams provide behavioral health and wellness supports to students across our schools. Through California’s Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI), Bright Star Schools can now receive funding for eligible services we already provide to students.
This state funding helps us sustain and strengthen the counseling, wellness, and student support services available across our Bright Star community.

At Bright Star Schools, we believe student well-being is essential to learning, growth, and success.
Our School Counselors provide a range of behavioral health and wellness supports to students every day.
Through California’s Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI), Bright Star Schools can now receive reimbursement for eligible behavioral health and wellness services we already provide. This funding helps us sustain and strengthen the supports available to students and families across our schools.
What does this mean for families?
- Stronger student supports. Reimbursement provides additional resources that can be reinvested into behavioral health, wellness, and student support services across Bright Star Schools.
- Same trusted support. Students will continue to receive support from their school teams based on their needs. CYBHI simply provides Bright Star with a new way to help fund eligible services, especially as many districts cut mental health services.
- No cost to families. Families will not pay copays, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket expenses for services reimbursed through CYBHI.
- No insurance? No problem. Students without insurance will continue to have access to the school-based supports they need.
What if my child does not receive or need ongoing counseling?
School Counselors support students in many different ways beyond individual or small-group counseling. Depending on the service and circumstances, CYBHI may allow Bright Star to seek reimbursement for eligible behavioral health and wellness supports such as:
- Classroom Lessons: Social-emotional learning, coping skills, healthy relationships, conflict resolution, and other wellness topics.
- Brief Student Check-ins: Short-term supportive conversations, problem-solving, and check-ins with students.
- Individual & Small-Group Counseling: Targeted support based on identified student needs.
- Crisis Support: Responding when a student is experiencing an immediate behavioral health or wellness concern.
- Family Support: Partnering with parents and caregivers around a student's social-emotional or behavioral needs.
- Care Coordination: Connecting students and families with school- or community-based resources and services.
- Case Management: Following up on student needs, services, referrals, and progress.
- Consultation: Collaborating with teachers, school staff, families, and other providers to support student well-being.
How you can help:
Please provide your child's health insurance information and consent for Bright Star Schools to submit claims for eligible services through the CYBHI Fee Schedule.
Providing this information allows Bright Star to receive reimbursement for eligible services provided to your child and reinvest those resources into student supports.
There is no cost to your family, and your child will continue to receive appropriate school-based support regardless of insurance status.
What is CYBHI?
The Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI) is a statewide California initiative designed to make behavioral health and wellness services more accessible to children and young people.
Through CYBHI, schools can receive reimbursement for eligible behavioral health and wellness services provided to students—including many services our Bright Star School Counselors already provide.
What Does This Mean For My Family?
There is no cost to families.
Families will not pay copays, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket costs for services covered through CYBHI.
Insurance is not required to receive support.
Students can continue accessing Bright Star’s school-based supports regardless of their insurance status.
Your child’s support continues.
CYBHI does not change Bright Star’s commitment to providing students with the support they need.
Your participation helps strengthen our schools.
Funding received through CYBHI can be reinvested into the programs and services that support the wellbeing of Bright Star students.
Your information is protected.
Bright Star Schools is committed to protecting the privacy and confidentiality of our students and families. Information collected through CYBHI is used to support student services and
administer the reimbursement program in accordance with applicable privacy laws and requirements
A student’s access to support at Bright Star is not based on their family’s insurance or immigration status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my family be charged?
No. Families will not be charged copays, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket expenses for services reimbursed through CYBHI.
Will this change the counseling services my child receives?
No. CYBHI provides Bright Star with an additional way to fund eligible services. Students will continue receiving school-based support based on their needs.
What if my child does not have health insurance?
Your child can still receive support at Bright Star Schools.
Why does Bright Star need my child’s insurance information?
Insurance information allows Bright Star to seek reimbursement for eligible services provided to your child. That funding helps us sustain and strengthen student wellness supports across our schools.
What if I choose not to provide consent?
Your child will continue to have access to appropriate school-based supports. Bright Star simply may not be able to seek CYBHI reimbursement for eligible services provided to your child.
