Bright Star Schools is proud to welcome Dr. Emily O’Neal as the new principal of Valor Academy High School, where she will lead with a bold vision centered on belonging, opportunity, and excellence for every student.

With more than two decades of experience in education—including eight years as a principal and four years as an assistant principal—Dr. O’Neal joins the Valor community with a deep commitment to helping students discover their potential and pursue lives of purpose. As principal, she is focused on building a culture where rigorous academics and meaningful relationships go hand in hand, ensuring that every Lion feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

“At Valor Academy High School, we believe belonging and high expectations go hand in hand,” said Dr. O’Neal. “I am excited to build on Valor’s strong foundation while expanding opportunities, strengthening community partnerships, and broadening every Lion’s sense of what’s possible.”

For Dr. O’Neal, leadership begins with creating a sense of belonging. This year’s school mantra, “Protect the Den,” reflects her belief that students thrive when they feel safe, known, and connected to their community.

“The Den is where belonging begins,” she said. “When students feel seen and supported, they develop the confidence to embrace wonderment, take risks, build resilience, and find joy in learning.”

Originally from the Chicago area, Dr. O’Neal began her career in education teaching in the District of Columbia Public Schools before spending much of her teaching and leadership journey in Chicago. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa, a master’s degree in Educational Administration from Lewis University, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of St. Francis. Her doctoral research explored how principals led schools through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Throughout her career, Dr. O’Neal has been recognized for developing strong school communities, supporting exceptional educators, and leading schools to surpass ambitious goals. Her vision for Valor Academy High School builds on that foundation while elevating what students can expect from their high school experience.

Under her leadership, Valor will continue expanding access to transformative opportunities that prepare students for success in college, career, and beyond. This includes strengthening partnerships with industry leaders and community organizations, creating innovative internship and career pathways, and ensuring that every student—not just a select few—has access to meaningful experiences outside the classroom.

From hands-on learning opportunities and college visits to new partnerships with organizations, Dr. O’Neal is committed to broadening students’ horizons and helping every Lion imagine new possibilities for their future.

Guided by Valor’s core values of integrity, leadership, community, social justice, and excellence, Dr. O’Neal believes schools have the power to transform lives by combining high expectations with unwavering support.

“Through strong partnerships with students, families, and our community, we are creating the foundation, resources, and opportunities that prepare every Lion to thrive,” she said.

As Bright Star Schools welcomes Dr. O’Neal to the Valor community, students, families, and staff can look forward to an exciting new chapter—defined by belonging, innovation, and a shared commitment to ensuring every Lion is prepared for a life of purpose.
