What made you decide to apply to DLI’s Aspiring Principals of Color Fellowship?
I applied to DLI because it is the only fellowship in California specifically designed to empower leaders of color, which directly aligns with my 'why.'
My journey as an educator and leader has always been about ensuring equity and representation for Black and Brown communities. I joined DLI to deepen my knowledge and skills to effectively lead, inspire, and sustain a pipeline of Black and Brown leaders who will champion social and racial justice as well as create transformational change in our schools and communities.
How did you balance your work as an assistant principal with the demands of the Fellowship?
Just as we utilize timers in the classroom to maximize learning time, I used Google Calendar to manage all aspects of my life. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is a priority for me, so I made it a point to schedule everything and remain committed to my plans, which kept me organized and intentional.
I also gave myself permission to rest when needed, recognizing the importance of self-care. As leaders of color, we often carry the weight of our responsibilities without taking the time to reset so I made it a point to schedule self-care into my calendar.
What was the program like?
DLI has been a truly life changing experience for me! Over the course of the 16 month fellowship, I have been poured into by professors and my mentor who are deeply committed to ensuring that I have the tools and knowledge to break systemic barriers and the influence of white supremacy culture in education.
This journey has not only deepened my understanding of equitable leadership but also reaffirmed my why and my passion for creating a lasting impact for students who look like me and those who live in neighborhoods that mirror my own upbringing. The fellowship has empowered me to better serve my community and advocate fiercely for the students and families who inspire me every day.
What was the most impactful or meaningful part of the fellowship for you personally?
The most impactful part of the fellowship for me was having a mentor who guided me through the program and supported me in my journey to becoming an Assistant Principal. Every fellow is thoughtfully paired with an experienced leader of color who serves as a guide, advisor, and advocate. My mentor was my rock, providing invaluable support as I navigated the complexities of the program and offering insights that have propelled my career forward.
Another deeply meaningful part of the fellowship was the bond I formed with my cohort. Having like-minded individuals alongside me, cheering me on and sharing their experiences, made all the difference. Even now, we stay connected through our group chat continuing to support one another as we progress on our leadership paths.
What would you say to someone considering applying to the Fellowship?
If you are an aspiring leader of color, I wholeheartedly encourage you to apply to the fellowship. There aren’t many spaces intentionally designed for educators of color to grow, connect, and thrive as leaders so if you’re ready to lead with purpose and create lasting change, this fellowship is for you.
Anything else you’d add?
