KCAL News CBS LA Features Bright Star's Approach to Support Students' Mental Health and Well-Being!
We’re proud that KCAL News CBS Los Angeles featured Bright Star Schools’ approach and program to support our students’ mental health and well-being!
The COVID pandemic affected everyone, including children. As Valor Academy Elementary School teacher Elyssa Arroyo says, “We’re seeing more emotional needs and support that students need in that area.”
Through Bright Star’s approach to social emotional learning and support, including the RULER program from Yale University, our students eceive robust support and learn important skills.
Valor Elementary principal May Oey explains, “We start with a morning circle and do a mood meter check in on how they’re feeling. After each break, they do mindful breathing.” And each classroom has a “calm corner” when students need a moment to center themselves.
Our students are thriving in the program. As student David says, “I like to do the hot cocoa breathing. When I’m sad, it helps me. When I’m mad, it helps me. It helps me a lot.”
We’re proud to grow our students’ emotional well-being so that they can express their emotions and be their best selves.
Thank you, CBS LA for telling our story!
